Workout Wednesday, and thank-you’s

Good morning everyone, and thank you so much for the comments yesterday!!  You’ve now got me convinced that:

1) I can learn how to sew;

2) Ricotta would be a good substitute to try (and I whip the hell out of it during the frosting-making process, so texture shouldn’t be a problem); and

3) HOLY CRAP LEATHER WORKING IS WAY BEYOND MY CURRENT ABILITIES.  DAMN. Perhaps I’ll have to commission one of you lovely experts to make me a holster 🙂  (Actually, the real reason I wish I could sew leather is that I really like my current method of carry, but it could be SO MUCH BETTER with a few changes — i.e., if it was actually designed to be a carry method.  Oh well.)

On to the exercise stuff!  I’m currently on Week 5 of my c25k run, and the big insight I have is this:

I was running too fast.

Running at 7 mph, while good, was just beyond my abilities to sustain.  I feel a little bad dropping it to 6 mph, but that pace let me do three 5-min segments, or two 8-min segments, without crapping out, passing out, or throwing up.  I hope to work up to a faster speed eventually, but for now each running day has me running longer and longer periods; I plan to stick with the slower pace.  (Tomorrow’s run is 20-min straight.  *trepidation*)

Workout Wednesday – er, Thursday

Good morning all!  Well, despite my inability to drag my sleepy butt out of bed yesterday, I did in fact go to the gym; I’d prepped last night’s chicken adobo and left Mike to heat it up while I went running.  (You should totally try that recipe, BTW — it’s quick, simple, and seriously delicious.  Do marinate it the night before, though, or it can be too vinegar-y.)

Yesterday’s run was the third run of Week 4 in my c25k program and I don’t think I’m ready to progress.  The first 3 minute run is fine (though I still have to watch my breathing or I start gasping around the 2 minute mark); the first 5 minute run is hard but doable; the second 3 minute run is tiring but doable; and then the second 5 minute run is DEATH DEATH DEATH DYING OH MY GOD MY IPHONE PROGRAM IS TRYING TO KILL ME.  Day 2 I’d kept my usual constant speed of 7 mph and almost threw up as I finished the second 5-minute period; yesterday I did half the last period at 7 mph, dropped it to 6 mph for sixty seconds and then back to 7 mph for the last ninety seconds.  It was a good compromise that kept me moving and jogging without mentally reviewing my next of kin and burial wishes.

Oh, and the worst part of the workout?  I came back to the Kitty Den — sweaty, red-faced and seriously hot — and plunked myself down to stretch.  I spread my legs in a straddle, leaned over and grabbed the bottom of my left foot, and began to stretch my left hamstring . . . and Rajah ran over and rubbed his furry, shedding body and tail all over my sweaty face, covering it with fur.

BLECH!!!!!!!!

(I thought there was no way I could feel any more disgusting — hot, perspiring, and covered with cat fur.  That was before I opened the dishwasher while it was still going and got blasted with soapy steam.  Fleh!!!)

Workout Wednesday

Good morning everyone!  Well, I solved the chalky-chunky problem of the protein powder; you just have to add it gradually and use a mini-mixer.  I usually don’t bother on days that I run; on lifting days I make a smoothie with about six frozen strawberries, 1/3 cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt, and enough Soy Milk Light to make it blend.  Once it’s nicely pureed I keep the blender going and tap in the powder.  You get a thick, delicious, fruity-vanilla-y shake that’s really tasty!

I’m stalling, folks.  I’m due to run Week 3, Day 3, today, and I woke up with a killer headache from grinding my teeth last night.  And quite frankly I’m scared of Week 4.  It’s still a struggle for me to run for 3 minutes without stopping; I think 5 minutes is going to kick my ass.  *whimper*  Guess I’ll have to redo my music mix before I tackle that bad boy!

If you’re curious, I’m taking my lifting workouts from this book.  It’s hard for me to give up my Barbie weights (as they derisively term the 2 or 3 pounders), but Mike PROMISES me I’m not going to bulk up by lifting heavier weights.  I’ve decided I’m never going to have super-skinny arms — never have, never will — so instead I’m concentrating on getting strong(er)!  Wish our little gym had a chin-up bar, and wish they had a squat rack, but I haven’t had to do chin-ups yet and I’m making do with free-weights.

Workout Mix Wednesday *UPDATED*

Good morning all! My computer is apparently as sleepy as I was, seeing as how it’s frozen Firefox twice so far. I’ll update this post later with this week’s songs, but I gotta run off to the gym now!

UPDATE: Poof!  Mike wasn’t kidding, the second week is noticeably harder than the first week.  Week 1 was almost like a gimme — perhaps because I haven’t *actually* just been sitting on my couch — while Week 2 made me puff.  Add that to the fact that I haven’t worked out since Friday and I fought a stitch in my side with every running segment.  On the upside, I increased the running segment speed to 8:34 miles, with the last segment going at a 8:00 mile pace.  Week by week, that’s how we’ll get it done!

Workout Mix Wednesday

Good morning everyone!  Today I’ve got two Official LookingForLissa product endorsements for you!

1) The Vibram Five Fingers.  I’ve only done two runs with them so far, but they don’t hurt my feet (my biggest worry) and I’ve noticed a lot less tension/pain in my shins and my arches.  They also make me notice the clunkiness of my gait — I feel like I’m going WHAM WHAM WHAM instead of smoothly transitioning from one foot to another.  Something to work on!

2) The C25K (Couch to 5K) program.  Again, I’ve only done two runs so far, but I really like the clear aural cues for running/walking, the simplicity of the program’s layout, and the fact that I can import my own music.

And speaking of music, here are the five songs rockin’ my iPod this week:

  1. Bodies by Drowning Pool – Rawrrr!  ANGRY music! RAWR!!!
  2. Dragula by Rob Zombie – This one makes me think of The Matrix and how I want a body like Trinity’s.  (And remember — there was only one Matrix movie.  The others didn’t exist.)
  3. Feel Good by Gorillaz – Great beat, and if you’ve ever seen the video you can think on the weird-and-funky gorilla cartoons.
  4. Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango) by Shakira – Don’t ask me why the Spanish version is better than the English version; I don’t know why, it just is.
  5. Hey Jealousy by Gin Blossoms – If you’re around my age, you know every word of this song without bothering to think about it, and you can sing along even when you’re completely out of breath.

Double Ow!

Owwwwwwww ow ow ow ow ow!

Long-time readers knows that I am not a fan of exercise for exercise’s sake.  I ran track and played soccer throughout high school and continued playing soccer casually through college and beyond.  I love being in shape, but I often get bored on the silly elliptical and since I’m naturally lazy, the couch and the book too often wins out over going to the gym.  Double that when my workout partner is in Charlotte!  I tend to go through periods of “being good” — i.e. exercising regularly at least three times a week — that will be alternated with long periods of not going at all.

I ended one of those long periods by going to the gym with Mike yesterday.

Holy cow I hurt.

I didn’t do that much — 35 minutes on the elliptical — and my legs and butt are fine, only a tiny bit sore.  It’s my arms that are killing me.  While I walk at a VERY brisk pace at least fifteen minutes a day (as brisk as I can possibly do, because, honey, it’s COLD out in Boston!!), apparently I don’t work my arms on a regular basis.  Combine that with a trip to the range yesterday afternoon, and I woke up this morning going OW OW OW.

*whimper*

The second ow?  Mike and I got our W-2’s this past week.

OW OW OW OW OW OW.

I’m not going to tell you how much was withheld for taxes, only that I felt a serious reaming in the direction of my backside.
