Three-picture Thursday: 5/31/2012

Posted by Lissa on May 31, 2012

Good morning all! I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I have several lovely photos to share with you and my writing creative juices have been dried up for a while, anyway.

First up: the bounty of a Florida garden!

I’ve got one Husky Cherry Tomato plant and three Grape Tomato plants. Both Mike and his father commented that the grape tomatoes are spheres rather than grape-like oblongs, but the sweetness and size makes them clearly different from the Cherries.

(BTW I haven’t trimmed the tomato plants, so they’re awfully tall and gangly and draping over each other’s cages. I couldn’t bear to cut off tomato flowers and little green globes … Also, the taller the plant, the easier it is to examine for caterpillar monsters.)

Next up is a dessert plate from the Memorial Day dinner with Mike’s folks:

I think the pound cake was a bit overcooked … The outside wasn’t BURNED, per say, and didn’t taste burned, but it was a far deeper brown than I had anticipated. So I used a cookie cutter to make stars of the slices before piling them with homemade whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries. Oh, and that’s a black-and-white creme brulee. Two tips: 1) lay down a layer of chocolate ganache before you spoon in the pudding; 2) despite what the recipe said, brown sugar was NOT good for torching on top. Use white sugar, the finer the better.

And finally, nothing caps a post like a ridiculous looking Rajah lounging on Mike’s lap:

We’re gonna report him to the cat union one of these days. I swear.

Happy Almost-Friday, everyone!

President Obama: “Polish Death Camp”

Posted by Lissa on May 30, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said President Barack Obama misspoke on Tuesday when he referred to a “Polish death camp” while honoring a Polish war hero.
The president’s remark had drawn immediate complaints from Poles who said Obama should have called it a “German death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland,” to distinguish the perpetrators from the location. Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski called it a matter of “ignorance and incompetence.”

The Polish Embassy in Washington, on its website, has a “how-to guide” on concentration camps that states that references to Polish death camps are “factually incorrect slurs” that should be corrected.
The Associated Press Stylebook states that when referring to “World War II camps in countries occupied by Nazi Germany, do not use phrases like Polish death camps that confuse the location and the perpetrators. Use instead, for example, death camps in Nazi-occupied Poland.”

No wonder they so rarely let our President go off teleprompter.

I would like you to close your eyes for a moment and imagine the reactions had a President McCain said those exact words. I’m thinking words like “senile” and “incompetent” and “gratuitously insulting.”

Anyone can have a slip of the tongue. This happens to be a pretty dumb one, and I can’t help but feel it’s going to be buried by the mainstream media as much as possible.

It’s a ….

Posted by Lissa on May 29, 2012

ME: “So, how often does it happen that it’s a mistake? I mean, my dad was told his third kid was a boy but it turned out to be a girl. Are we sure now, or is it still iffy?”

TECHNICIAN (DECISIVELY): “It’s a boy.” Nods firmly. Looks wryly at me. “Unless your daughter has testicles. AND a penis.”

ME: “Alrighty then!”

We’ve got a son incubating!!

P.S. total weight gain at this, the halfway point, is perhaps eight pounds, but it’s ALL in my belly. There is definitely a lil’ human growing there 🙂

The hostess with the mostest

Posted by Lissa on May 24, 2012

That’s what THEY said, anyway 🙂

The client event went very well, I think. We had the usual few hiccups – the presentation was 50 minutes, not 20, as the guy had claimed; we had a guest determined to be the smartest guy in the room and therefore ask difficult, technical questions; Geico got his knickers in a twist because he wasn’t invited to join everyone at the steakhouse until right before the presentation – but on the whole it went smoothly.

And everyone loved the food! I got asked for the taquito recipe by a handful of people (you can find it here, if you’re curious; I did NOT use canned chicken, because ew), the bruschetta got devoured, I heard people crunching away at the veggies, and all the cheddar, most of the brie and half of the pepperoni disappeared. (No, I didn’t eat any of the brie. I’m on a pregnancy diet.)

The dinner afterward also went well but it was looooooooooong. And I almost wanted to smack Big Boss, who 1) got to the restaurant before anyone else; 2) put down his stuff at the head of the long, skinny table seating 20; 3) did not reserve any other seats. So, we had him at one end, while Veep, the presenter and I were all the way at the other end since we’d been cleaning up, and a long run of clients/prospects in the middle with no Sunshine Financial representation. Not ideal.

(I asked him, exasperated, why he hadn’t saved us seats in the middle or scattered about. His frank answer? “Because I’m not that smart.” Oh.)

…. and he IS that smart, he’s just not an accomplished party host. Different skill set, I suppose.

Anyway, the clients loved the food and gave me huge props for arranging all of it, I didn’t have to deal with a catering firm who would feed eight people (that turned into twenty), it cost my company perhaps a third of what a catering bill would have run, and I got a delicious steak dinner at the company’s expense.

AND I didn’t die in the horrific, terrifying thunderstorm that made my ten PM commute home a nightmare, so there’s that!!

Adventures in catering

Posted by Lissa on May 22, 2012

We’re having a small, exclusive investor event this evening at the office. The idea was to invite perhaps a dozen clients or prospects to get a presentation from one of our investment companies. I started inviting people last week and, as of Thursday, had four people confirmed. I told Veep that, as long as there were ten people or less, I’d arrange the hors d’oeuvres myself … he and Big Boss are taking everyone to dinner afterward and it’s hard to find a catering company that will do food for less than 20 people or so. Besides, I *like* appetizers; I always plan too many when I have gatherings and then have to cut down the menu.

So. Four people, plus three at the office, plus the presenter – eight people. No sweat!

Then a few more people responded in the affirmative. So, on Friday, I was up to nine guests plus the four hosts – thirteen. Still not a big deal.

You see where this is going, right?

As of this morning I have fifteen confirmed guests, a sixteenth who will make it if his doctor’s appointment doesn’t run longer than two hours, and us four. So about twenty people where I once planned for eight.

Thank goodness I always make more food than I think people can eat 🙂

What am I serving? I bought a veggie platter to start with. (If it were my money I’d chop the celery, cucumber, make the dip etc.; however, it’s NOT my money, so I bought it pre-made.) I’ve sliced up two sticks of Boar’s Head pepperoni and a block of Kerry’s Aged Reserve Cheddar, with a long triangle of Brie and a cheese knife all packed up. I’ve got reduced fat Triscuits and Sun-dried Tomato Wheat Thins. I’ve thinly sliced, brushed with olive oil and toasted in the oven an entire loaf of French bread; the tomatoes, basil leaves (from my garden!), garlic cloves, olive oil, salt and pepper are packed and ready to be made into bruschetta. And I boiled two chicken breasts until I could shred them, mixed them with 4 Cheese Mexican Sargento, some diced roasted red peppers and some mild salsa; they’ll get spread onto wonton skins, rolled up and baked into chicken taquitos.

That’s enough for twenty people to nibble on, right?

Ahhhhh AR-15 :)

Posted by Lissa on May 21, 2012

Good morning all! I hope you had as lovely a weekend as I did! We met at Ruth’s Chris for happy hour on Friday ($7 filet sandwich, YUM!!!!), I got my vacuuming and mopping done, Mike and I tried out a Jamaican restaurant down in Orlando (not QUITE as good as my Uncle Peter’s restaurant, of course, but the chicken roti and jerk chicken were quite delicious) —

— I played in the garden (and did NOT pick my biggest jalapeño, thanks to all your wonderful advice and pictures!), floated in the pool for an hour (first time this year!), and . . . range therapy!!!

I’m really not much of a rifle person. Pistols are more enjoyable for me; the long setup, structured breathing and use of scopes for precision rifle shooting just don’t interest me as much. That said, AR-15’s are FUN!! They kick enough for you to know they’re there without leaving you a shoulder bite.

It was the first time we’d taken this particular beast out and it was a helluva lot of fun. After we ran through all our .223 ammo we took turns plinking with Sigmund (Sig 229) wearing his .22 conversion kit. I’ve found that even just IMAGINING the pregnant pause and the BEEP of an IDPA match makes my aim suffer. I’ll need to practice more with some type of timer app.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are setting up for a marvelous week!

When is this popper ready for picking?

Posted by Lissa on May 18, 2012

Look! Look! It’s growing!

But when is it big enough? I somehow doubt it’s going to turn bright red like my tomatoes. Do I just pick it when I think it’s big enough to be tasty?

Oh, and Happy Friday!

Conversation and coffee

Posted by Lissa on May 17, 2012

ME: “Apparently there’s a Baby Sale this Saturday. I might try to stop by after Rajah’s vet appointment.”

MIKE: “They SELL BABIES? Is that even legal??”

ME: *narrowed eyes*

MIKE: “Lissa, you’re going to have one of your own in a couple months. Do you really need to buy another one?”

ME: *hisses*

MIKE: “Well, it IS Florida. I mean, I guess anything is legal here.”

ME: “You’re a brat.”

It’s a good thing he’s such a handsome guy!
