Escape your life for a little while — come play in mine.

But remember, the Republicans want to snoop in your bedroom!!

Oh, for the love of Pete.

Driving to work this morning, I was treated to a Jay G-worthy blast of rage. No, it wasn’t the commute. The drivers were no worse than usual, my car is comfy and cozy, and Rajah* had made me coffee to drink along the way.

No, my fury — combined with a hefty dose of WHAT THE F*** IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!? — was aimed squarely at the school administrators in Chicago who are banning homemade lunches. They’re making all the students buy school lunches because they’re “healthier.”

*cue the exploding head*

Mind you, it’s not about forcing each student to shell out $2.25 to the school each day, oh, no. It’s that the SCHOOL knows better — and can/will provide better — than the parents. It’s for their own good. In loco parentis. Why trust parents to feed their children correctly, anyway? The school board knows best.

This is CHICAGO. The very epitome of deep-blue. Yet the folks who scream hysterically at parents who don’t want their kids to take Sex Ed at age ten are fine with the school literally dictating what their children can ingest on a daily basis.

Shiva WEPT.

Here’s the link (iPhone sucks at links): http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2011/04/12/2011-04-12_chicago_public_school_bans_kids_from_bringing_lunch_forcing_them_to_eat_cafeteri.html?r=news/national

I’m sure others are blogging about this latest nanny-state insanity, so I’ll paste links as I find them.

*I tend to think that Mike makes the coffee, but he swears that Rajah does it. Who am I to argue?

  1. I posted this on my blog, yesterday. One of the responding comments suggested as most folks don’t chew well, there will soon be Union chewers assigned to the schools, at taxpayer expense, of course.
Gotta keep those baby birds healthy!

  2. When I went through school, the history class would hit on Sparta every year.

Every year, the class was told of the Spartan educational system. Of how it would force parents to concede their children to the state for schooling. We were told that this was awful.

Every year, we were told that Spartans ate a government-decreed diet and nothing else. This was, again, terrible.

We were told these things in a public school. In a state where all children are required by law to be schooled. Even homeschooling has to be sponsored and supervised by a public school district…

I guess Chicago has even more trouble with historical comprehension than schools in New Hampshire.

    Is it 2012 yet?

This is ridiculous. I suppose the pizza rolls and ranch I just ran up to the school for my 16 year old wouldn’t pass for a good lunch but usually I take him something way healthier than what the school serves. Besides, they feed the high schoolers the same portions that they feed the elementary kids here and that 3 bites can’t be considered a good brain food lunch for my almost 6 foot tall, 223 pound little boy. LOL

  4. I don’t suppose it’s even a tiny bit possible that this is an effort to improve the income of the school dietary department? And thus justify an increase in federal funding and maybe a tax levy?

My guess is that the combination of bad publicity and the threat of litigation will result in a sudden reversal of the policy. And maybe the person responsible will find that she has a sudden desire “to spend more time with my family.”
