Happy Caturday: Deer-watching edition

Posted by Lissa on August 29, 2009

Lissa:  “That’s funny, Mike.  I looked out the window and for a second I thought I saw a deer.  See that patch of brush, looks like a head attached to a body?”

Mike (looking out window):  “Um, Lissa, there’s a real deer out there!”

No, it wasn’t the patch I was looking at.  That was definitely inanimate plant life.  But Bambi was out there, invisible from my view from the couch, nomming on some greenery.

Bambi in Charlotte

His apartment is in Charlotte, by the way.  It really is.  It’s just that his (tiny little) balcony is at the tail-end of the complex and overlooks a big ol’ forest.  (That, y’know, is the real sound of a Southerner.  It’s not the y’all’s, it’s the big ol’s.  Mike is already making fun of me; as soon as I cross the Mason-Dixon my drawl comes back.)

Happy Caturday!

UPDATE:  Rajah would make this sound while nomming his Bambi Stew:

Thanks Mike!

Your daily funny

Posted by Lissa on August 28, 2009

“This is like lighter fluid,” Sandy explained as he went back for another sip. Mad Dog’s not really hard per se, but it is almost cloyingly sweet, and it punches you right in the face. The grainy texture of the hooch is jarring with the completely ass-backward flavor pairing of kiwis and lemons. After debating over what could possibly be a worse flavor combination, we agree on loganberries and dog Shakespeare.

These brave taste-testers went looking for the best cheap beer, malt liquor and wine.  Put down your drink before you click over.  And for god’s sake, I hope you’re not drinking what they’re drinking.

In my mind I’m gone to Carolina . . .

Posted by Lissa on August 28, 2009

And in my body, too, as of this evening.

Mike left the Kitty Den at six this morning, after hugging and squeezing the cat enough to last him till mid-September.  *sniffle*  It makes it a lot easier that I’m following after him later today — I won’t really be on my own until Sunday afternoon.  At which point I’ll throw my very own pity-party, yay!!  You’re all invited!!

Here’s hoping for clear skies and smooth flights.

Happy Friday!

On the death of Ted Kennedy

Posted by Lissa on August 27, 2009

It’s hardly news to anyone, by now, that Ted Kennedy has passed away.

When the story broke, the Intrawebz were filled with fawning and adulation on one side, and venom-filled gloating on the other side.

Wasn’t it?

Well, the fawning was certainly there.  So was the adulation.

As for the hateful and hate-filled spitting on the man’s grave . . . well, here’s what a few of my regular reads had to say:

Jay G held himself to “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”  TOTWTYTR said the same.

Bruce sent sympathy for Ted’s daughter.

Bookworm set herself the goal of holding her tongue, though she later changed her mind.

Ed Morrissey added Ted to his prayers.

And that hate-mongering hate-monger race-traitorist evil-racist Michelle Malkin calls on people to mark his passing with appropriate solemnity and restraint.

But don’t forget — we Evil Conservatives are the haters!!!ELEVENTY!

Dammit, dammit, dammit

The Intrawebz ate my “why socialism is bad” post.  Crap.

I’ll try and re-create it later.  In the meantime — hit up the blogroll please 🙂

Holster FAIL. Gun safety FAIL. Darwin FAIL. General FAIL.

Posted by Lissa on August 25, 2009

At the gym this morning I was treated to an exclusive interview with Plaxico Burress, explaining how he managed to shoot himself in the leg.  Yes, I know you’re all jealous.  Don’t hate me, I think my lower abdominal muscles are still ripped from the inclined crunches I did last week.

So it turns out that brilliant Mr. Burress had stuck his gun into his jeans.  While walking up the stairs to the VIP room the gun started to slide down his leg.  Feeling this, Burress paused and grabbed for the gun, managing to snag the trigger through his jeans and shoot himself.

Oy.

Gun nuts, you want to help me count up the failures?  He was carrying a loaded gun without a safety and a round chambered WITH NO HOLSTER.

I think Darwin would have been better served if he’d shot his damn dick off.

Bonus Mike quote:

Interviewer:  “How are you going to adjust to prison?”
Mike:  “Kick someone’s ass the first day.”

Foodblogging!

Posted by Lissa on August 24, 2009

Why do I have the urge to take pictures of the food I eat?  It’s not like the edibles need to be preserved for posterity.  Y’all don’t really care what goes down my gullet.  And food pix aren’t as cute as kitty pix.  So why do it?

Simple.  I love food and I love when it’s nicely prepared and I love pretty presentation.  Yeah, we watch a fair amount of the Food Channel (food pr0n!) in the Kitty Den.

So if you’re looking for insightful political commentary, well, you’re not gonna find it here today.  (Or perhaps ever.)  If you’d like to see random pictures of delicious food — scroll down!

1) Lunch at Vinalia Wine Bar, Boston:  They do a great weekday lunch special where you get half a sandwich, a cup of soup and a side of fries in ten minutes for $7.  (The $7 was accurate; they ran a bit over on the ten minutes.)  In my case, it was a blackened chicken wrap with lettuce, avocado and bleu cheese dressing, along with a cup of tomato-basil soup.  YUM!

Vinalia lunch special

(Oh, and a pickle.  But I never eat the pickle.  If you come to lunch with me you’re always welcome to eat my pickle and also to have any lemon that comes with my water.  Although why you’d want to contaminate perfectly good water with ucky lemon is beyond me.)

Mike splurged on the cod and ratatouille, topped with fried onion strings.  I have a feeling that ratatouille is not supposed to be as delicious as this was.  I have another feeling that it was due to the copious amounts of melted butter.

Random Foodblogging #2) Birthday dinner at Brasserie Jo!

Happy birthday Mike!

It was SWELTERINGLY HOT Friday afternoon.  Thank god I planned ahead and wore a nice shell under my suit jacket.  Mike, having taken the day off, was more comfy in his polo shirt and khakis.

No, the hot weather did not dissuade us from ordering rich hot food.  That’s what air conditioning is for!

Mike ordered the rack of lamb, and was only narrowly dissuaded from gnawing the bones once he’d finished with the meat:

Baaaaaa!

I went with the chicken coq au vin, served with alsace kneffla (whatever that is!):

No, I didn't finish it. I gave a bunch to Mike.

For dessert, Mike went with Crème Brûlée; I selected the Summer Berry Pot de Crème.

And then we fell over and died.

And then we staggered home and collapsed in a delirious food coma of bliss.

For those of you who were around last year, you’ll be happy to know that this year’s birthday present was a lot more successful than last year’s.  Mike was quite pleased with his pasta maker!

Fire-engine red is the proper color for pasta-makers. Really.

He was a little less pleased by the clumpiness of the pasta when boiled; I suppose we didn’t separate it enough in the flour-strewn cookie sheet:

Yay for pasta!

BONUS PIC:  After I ate all the fruit out of my Frutta al Forno, I received a subliminal sign that I had achieved Foodie Nirvana:

Yin yang

Happy Nomming!

Technology FAIL

Posted by Lissa on August 20, 2009

So, I was all excited about my little RSS feed-things in the left sidebar.  WAS.  Past tense.  Because I’m finding that it’s randomly creating links to the new posts as they pop up, especially in blogspot.

Grrrr.  Not that I mind link-whoring, but I’d like it to be intentional!

I’ve taken down some of the links to blogspot and I’ll try to fix this issue later tonight.  If I’m randomly linking to every post you publish, please drop me a comment and let me know!
