What, exactly, was the reasoning here?

Posted by Lissa on March 5, 2009

According to Ace, Mr. and Mrs. Brown gave the Obamas the following presents:

1) “Top Shop dresses (with matching necklaces) and a selection of books by British authors (for the Obama girls)”

2) “ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President” (for President Obama; “Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.”)

3) President Obama also received the framed commission from a ship representing historical bonds between our two countries and a first edition of a classic Church biography series.

Now, I’m hardly the queen of thoroughly-thoughtful, well-in-advance gift planning.  In fact, I’m kind of notorious for forgetting my friends’ birthdays.  (My lame excuse is that I have a lot of immediate family members and a bad memory for dates; I save my precious tiny date databank for moms, sisters, fiances etc.)*

But I really don’t think the return gifts were very nice:

1) “Mrs Obama gave the Brown children, Fraser and John, two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter”

2) “a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD” for Prime Minister Brown

Ace notes that toy helicopters can be bought in the White House gift shop for $15.

Rookie mistake?  Mark of contempt?  A horrible slipup from the staff?

It just seems so POINTLESS.  What a silly, stupid way to insult the leaders of one of our most important allies.

On the bright side, my sister can now quit her job.  Unlike me, she is the QUEEN of gift-planning and giving.  Jenny, turn in your resignation — I’m sending you to the White House!

*I’m not kidding about how terrible I am at birthdays.  I’ve had one friend’s birthday tacked on my fridge since February — the last time I talked to the gal — in desperate hopes of remembering.  Another good friend has a birthday that I remember ONLY because my first cat had the same birthday.  And these are both bridesmaids of mine.  I suck.

If only that were the worst of it. President Joe Cool snubbed PM Gordon Brown officially as well. http://tinyurl.com/cz7tkc Barack Obama cancels press conference with Gordon Brown “because of snow”

    And http://tinyurl.com/ar73qp

Far less gracious than GWB was.

It’s really shameful. And this from a guy who thinks talks with our enemies will solve everything. Maybe he should figure out how to handle it when our friends come to visit first.

I think “ignorant” and “amateur” about cover it.

I also think Obama is too ignorant about National Security to understand the fire he plays with. A tepid or hostile Great Britain could undermine a *lot* of international treaties. Right now the European Union is ganging up on Microsoft. Next target could well be all US interests in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and Australia.

You don’t suck. I think you’re getting better.
PS – Remember to call our good friend on Sunday. 🙂

[Thank you honey. You are one of many I have depended on for help!! – Lissa]
