EXCELLENT news

Posted by Lissa on October 28, 2008

About damn time, but still — good riddance!

Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in history and patriarch of Alaska politics, was convicted Monday of all seven felony charges for making false statements.

The verdict could spell an ignominious end to the political career of a man who rose to be one of the most dominant figures in the Senate and helped transform Alaska in its 50 years of statehood. [snip]

“I am innocent. This verdict is the result of the unconscionable manner in which the Justice Department lawyers conducted this trial,” Stevens added. “I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights. I remain a candidate for the United States Senate. I will come home on Wednesday and ask for your vote.”

Whatever party affiliation, corrupt scum is corrupt scum.  Enjoy your time in jail, jerkwad.

Don’t read too much into this. I doubt there will be any prison time, due to his age and position.

And it isn’t apparent that the conviction will be upheld on appeal.

This seems more ‘technical’ violation, rather than something that affects Alaska and the nation. Yes, we need to keep people honest, prosecute wrong doing when we can. But we don’t prosecute political candidates for making knowingly false statements with the intent to affect an election, now do we? How is that not mail fraud, wire fraud, and assault – as well as election fraud?
