Per Don Surber, looks like a puppy mill got busted in West Virginia.
My first reaction was to mentally consign the owners to the Michael Vick level of punishment; namely, to be smeared with raw meat and then thrown into a pit of ravenous dogs. Naturally, the type of dog is customized depending on which breed had been abused by the perp. Seeing as how this puppy mill was churning out dachshunds, I imagine it would take a while to carry out justice, and that’s just fine.
However, on reading the AP article, it doesn’t look like the owners have been charged with neglect or abuse. They claim that it was a large operation, sure, but all the dogs were healthy, no fleas, had been wormed regularly, checked by vets, etc. etc. etc.
My gut suggests that raising 1,000 puppies without neglect or inhumane treatment is really hard to do without major help and larger premises than the ones raided for this story. We’ll see if they get charged with anything more serious. Meanwhile, the poor puppies are being sent to Utah to hang out with Michael Vick’s dogs.
BTW, the Lissaville Animal Shelter received a cat recently from a guard at Wal-Mart; someone sealed it into a cardboard box with duct tape and left it in the parking lot. Happily, kitty was cleaned up, vetted, and has gone home with a nice family. But seriously — what the f*ck is wrong with people?
